Hello Icons, Happy Utamaduni Day.
In the spirit of celebrating our broad cultures and diversity, here in Kenya, I decided to talk a little about the importance of ensuring diversity and inclusivity in our work, organizations, and creations. Since we all come from different backgrounds and hold different practices and beliefs, It is important that we learn to be accomodating to everyone as long as they are not in violation of our space, rights, or freedoms.
Also, the world is moving at a very fast pace both positively and negatively e.g some things that were deemed unacceptable then, have now found light in the front pages and we have no option but to move with the times; especially in the corporate world.
Even as creatives, we ought to consider the different recipient audiences and ensure that we are inclusive when putting out our work lest we be called out for our different biases and impact our work negatively.
I would love to know what some of your opinions are regarding diversity and inclusivity.
What does diversity mean to you?
Have you practiced inclusivity in your productions or organization?
What are some of the negative impacts of being exclusive?
What challenges have you faced while promoting inclusivity?
How do you balance being inclusive while still holding true to your beliefs?
Also, feel free to add to the discussion besides the above-mentioned questions.
A good brainstorming session needs diversity. I think comedy writers enjoy diversity in their writing rooms
I feel diversity is important because when people with different minds, values and cultures come together to satisfy a common goal for example in a company, it can enhance creativity, innovation and uniqueness which will make the company soar to greater heights.
I believe diversity is paramount to business growth and also problem solving in any field. Different ideas and experiences bring about different perspectives to better solve problems, bring about dialogue and generate creative solutions to problems.
Inclusivity and exclusivity are two sides of the same coin. It is either a pro or con depending on the field you're in. For example, in national government, being inclusive might mean bringing peace and growth within it's borders while internationally being exclusive to avoid exploitation of it's resources by foreigners.
Diversity... I'd say in this context is being broad in looking for requirements, capabilities and qualifications when looking for man power for your company. How I understand it... It would make more sense to hire a person who can do camera work, editing, animation and social media advertising unlike one knowledgeable in one field.
inclusivity... Making all your employees feel at home in their working environment. In this I mean accommodation of all religions... Muslim- Rasta - Christian. Societal communities like the " SDA " " akorino" and much more

On the negative impact of being exclusive, itnot only disadvantages the excluded but also the institutions, companies or workplaces that are exclusive because they miss out on the uniqueness and great abilities that people may have to offer regardless of their different backgrounds. I believe that everyone should get a chance to do what they can do without having to think of their different backgrounds as an obstacle to their goals.
Diversity is acknowledging that we all come from different backgrounds and be open enough no accommodate everyone with their differences.
I have tried my best to have inclusivity in MarkMe. But it's been harder to find female employees as a start up.
I like the diversity of leadership in Facebook, and its a clear helper to FB's growth. I would love to have leaders from different cultures and even religious backgrounds.
Diversity for me means giving different personalities and people a chance to lead ideas their way. Therefore, this action across different leadership platforms in an organization, will create a creative and innovative corporate culture
